Signed “Annely,” her family nickname. Her mother read it and did not believe it was real.
Her mother had spent a decade fighting courts on two continents for this girl. She knew what a document could be made to say. And the truth underneath the cable was stranger than any forgery.
She had been a mother for three weeks
Anna Maria had landed in Caracas on November 2, 1965, nine months pregnant, and was rushed from the airport to the Centro Medico maternity hospital, where she gave birth to a daughter the same day she arrived. When the “missing” front page ran in Washington, the girl the world was hunting had already been a mother for three weeks.
The husband was the twenty-five-year-old she had met at the German Embassy in Washington, where he worked the summer as the night watchman. They had crossed America with a Chow dog while, per the family's account, an accusation followed them from city to city and cost him one job after another. When a servant was finally reached by telephone in Caracas, he reassured the world's press in a single line the papers could not resist: “The husband, the wife and the baby are O.K., even the dog is O.K.”
One detail sat in the wire copy that nobody chased. The young family was staying in guarded seclusion at the mansion of a wealthy Venezuelan widow. A penniless couple with a newborn, hiding in a rich stranger's house in the city where the fortune was. Whose house? And why there?
